ABSTRACT
This chapter analyses the historical growth as well as the geographical configuration of the sport for development and peace (SDP) sector, in terms of the number and locations of the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) – its most significant contributors. Using the organizational database based on the website, the International Platform on Sport for Development, it argues that SDP has been predominantly a Euro-African phenomenon, although more recently the focus has slightly shifted to other regions. It is indicated that there have been a significant number of endogenous NGOs, possibly reflecting the tradition of the early good practices. It is also noted that Asia, Eastern and South-Eastern Asia in particular, is significantly underrepresented. Meanwhile, the speed of growth in terms the number of NGOs has seemingly slowed down recently, which conforms to the density dependence model in organizational ecology. Therefore, there might be a risk of more severe competition between NGOs resulting in potentially deteriorating quality of delivery.
