The deepening pace and level of economic and technological globalization in the last two decades or so and the improving conditions for investment have increasingly made Africa an attractive location for business. This has not only opened up new opportunities for foreign director investment (FDI) and multinational companies (MNCs), but also increased the demand for talent (e.g., Deloitte, 2014; Ernst & Young, 2014). African countries face several sets of intertwined challenges in strategic human resource management (HRM) and talent management (TM) (e.g., Cooke, Wood, & Horwitz, 2015; Mwila & Turay, 2018; Tarique, Briscoe, & Schuler, 2016). For the purpose of this chapter, we define talent management as the management of skilled and professional employees. We hold the view that TM is an integral part of human resource management and human capital development.
