International mobility for work in today's employment landscape is increasing. About 3% of the world's total population live and work abroad (OECD, 2017), more than at any time in history (see OECD, 2018, 2019). Most are of working age (20–59 years) and about half are women (UNPD, 2018). The focus of this chapter is the talent management (TM) of a particular type of internationally mobile individual – expatriates. Expatriation involves a physical relocation to another country, with or without accompanying family members as appropriate, for work and with the intention of staying there for a limited time (McNulty & Brewster, 2017a; Shaffer, Kraimer, Chen, & Bolino, 2012).
