ABSTRACT

The Convention on Biological Diversity was signed by many nations at the UN Conference on Environment and Development (the Earth Summit) in Rio de Janeiro in June, 1992. It entered into force on 29 December 1993, 90 days after the 30th ratification. It has three main objectives, namely:

The conservation of biological diversity.

The sustainable use of the components of biological diversity.

The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources.
