ABSTRACT
Even though the need for a global science-policy interface has been identified as a recurring gap in the governance of biodiversity, establishing such an institution has not been trouble free. The creation of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) was in fact the outcome of a relatively long and laborious international negotiation process during which several interests and world views had to be carefully conciliated. The complex array of rules and procedures that governs IPBES is the result of this slow genesis.
