ABSTRACT

Recently, an extensive article focused on the racist and sexist comments heaped upon Serena Williams each time she wins (Desmond-Harris 2016, 7 September). Typically, these comments have come from people posting racist comments at will, hiding behind the anonymity of social media, which suggests that we are not living in a post-racial society. Even with political correctness, some commentators, analysts and players have provoked a public discussion of racism by making comments derived from years of racist ideology – racism that has become part of the social fabric of the United States.
