ABSTRACT

The concluding sequence of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens (directed by J. J. Abrams, 2015) was both a pay-off for the millions of fans of the series and a teaser. Following years of warfare and clandestine operations, the Resistance finally learns of the hiding place of the last Jedi. Rey (Daisy Ridley) flies off to meet with him on her own, heading to the blue, almost entirely water-bound planet where he is hiding out. She lands on a sparse rocky habitation sticking out of the waters, and ascends the narrow stairs to the top. There she finds herself looking at the back of a man in hooded, monastic garb, who is staring out over the sea. She reaches out the lightsaber to him as he turns and reveals himself to be Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Before they can exchange words, the image disappears and the closing credits play. The audience is primed for Episode VIII.
