ABSTRACT
A sensory archaeology of the environment draws upon the multidisciplinary collaboration between environmental and interpretative archaeologies. This chapter provides a short summary of the role of perception within modern humans and how a person’s history and culture can affect their senses. I argue that the environment is under-theorised within archaeology. Drawing on ideas derived from the environmental humanities, I suggest a new set of concepts to help frame our understanding of past environmental sensoriums.
