ABSTRACT

This chapter will ascertain the extent to which the 2011 Census can be used to assess how social and spatial inequalities across the UK have risen or fallen since 2001. It is illustrated by cartograms that show how census data can be visualized. These cartograms are a small selection drawn from People and Places: A 21st Century Atlas of the UK by Dorling and Thomas (2016). The chapter illustrates how it is now possible to visualise census data and change between censuses to see the extent to which the population is becoming more concentrated in particular areas and which groups of people are concentrating where.
