ABSTRACT
Ideology has always played an important role in both traditional and contemporary Chinese polity, both domestic and foreign. It became of paramount importance after the founding of the People’s Republic of China by Mao Zedong in 1949 (Chai 1972a). The evolution of Chinese ideology remains the rationale for the legitimacy of the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
