ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we address the development of electronic music in the countries and territories which form the East Asian region: China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. The speed of development of this music has been different for each one: early for Japan and relatively late for China. However, it’s not so much the nature of their roots but rather the various tropisms which have influenced the way this music is practiced which render them most interesting. It is indeed fascinating to see at work the blend of the ancient and the latter-day technology and of the traditional culture and the call of the unknown, which give birth to a unique type of electronic music today. Even if East Asian composers create numerous works, most of them remain to be discovered in the West.
