ABSTRACT

In March 2013 two anti-gay incidents were reported in the province of Manitoba, Canada. The first made both the mainstream and the gay news circuit: a gay-owned restaurant was being run out of the town of Morris, about 60 kilometres south of Winnipeg. The restaurant owners were targeted by homophobic verbal attacks, the content of which came through loudly in the Winnipeg Press: some residents were quoted as saying, ‘they should get the hell out of here’ and ‘a lot of people don’t like it. You don’t know what they’re doing in the kitchen’ (McIntyre, 2013). The second incident was less widely reported: the house of an openly gay Winnipeg man was defaced with homophobic slurs.
