ABSTRACT

The critical reckoning of John Gower’s narrative voice goes back (at the very least) to Shakespeare and his collaborators, who begin Pericles, Prince of Tyre with Gower – and specifically his voice: To sing a song that old was sung, From ashes ancient Gower is come, Assuming man’s infirmities, To glad your ear, and please your eyes. (Pericles, 1.1.1–4)
