ABSTRACT

The actress Serafima Birman [1890–1976] says that the difference between perceiving a role “from the self” and “from the character” is this: Stanislavsky suggests to begin by building a hearth, and then a house around it – this means to perceive “from the self.” She, however, suggests building the house first, and then, at a later date, the oven inside it – this is perceiving “from the character.”
