ABSTRACT

Music in the Andes is integral to livelihoods, cosmologies, aesthetics, a sense of belonging and positioning in specific contexts. Music is also a force that creates and consolidates alliances, providing local “signatures” for each group and linking foreigners to certain regions. It lies at the core of entities and processes that embody human and non-human co-emergence and historical developments. This chapter discusses the conceptions and expressiveness of indigenous Andean music as it unfolds within and beyond the rural Andes today.
