ABSTRACT
Fifty years ago, the majority of Andean people lived in rural areas whereas today most of them live in urban centers and their numbers span several generations of rural to urban migrants. New kinds of economic, political, cultural, and environmental dynamics have emerged in conjunction with the increasing numbers of Andean people residing in cities and participating in city life who also maintain connections with their rural kin and rural resources, and who travel back and forth among multiple ecological and cultural landscapes. This chapter addresses how Andean peoples, in our contemporary moment, create lives for themselves on urban terrains as their identities are in flux. It also addresses the place of the city in the broader Andean environment.
