ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews how instructional materials have evolved in the field of teaching English to young learners (TEYL) from the 1920s when TEYL was in its very beginning to the first two decades of the twenty-first century. Critical issues and topics discussed include what ‘good’ instructional materials for TEYL are and what appropriate instructional practices are regarding materials. The chapter presents a review of instructional materials and how tasks presented in the materials are realized in the classroom, and examines learning outcomes related to different type of materials. Finally, recommendations are made for practice, and future directions are briefly explored. Teacher-prepared materials are beyond the scope of this chapter as they are too diverse to be adequately covered.
