ABSTRACT

Chapter 14 is devoted to the mythology of the mythical kings of Athens, starting with the reign of Theseus, and the myths of his sons Acamas and Demophon, before returning to the earliest times to consider the myths of the earlier kings. The second part of the chapter recounts the myths of the earlier kings of Athens, starting with the four first earth-born kings, Cecrops, Cranaos, Amphictyon, and Erichthonios, and then passing on to Erechtheus and his war against Eumolpos and the Eleusinians, and the myths of his daughters Creousa, Oreithuia, and Procris, until the circle is closed with the ascent of Theseus’ father Aigeus.
