ABSTRACT

Chapter 16 begins by describing how Polyneices and Eteocles, the two sons of Oedipus, quarrelled after his death, and Polyneices went to Argos on being excluded from the throne and enlisted the help of its king, Adrastos, to mount an expedition against Thebes. The subsequent mythical history of Thebes is then considered, and the mythology of the long-lived Theban seer Teiresias and his daughter Manto. The final part of the chapter explains how the Theban Wars affected the dynastic history of the Argolid.
