ABSTRACT

This final chapter, Chapter 24, considers such significant or interesting local legends and legendary figures as remain to be considered because there has been no occasion to mention them in other contexts. The first part covers the legends of Arcadia that were associated with its mythical ruling family, as descended from Pelasgos, the earth-born first king of the land. From there the chapter proceeds to the Greek islands, and further abroad to Asia Minor, and finally the Greek colonies of the west. Among the legends that are recounted are those of Pygmalion, of Hero and Leander, of Philemon and Baucis, and of Arion and the dolphin, reference also being made to strange or monstrous races of people who were supposed to live at the fringes of the world.
