ABSTRACT
The ‘global South’ and the ‘global North’ were simultaneous inventions through the operationalisation of the paradigm of difference. The unfolding global paradigms of difference were not only processes of racial hierarchisation of human species and social organisation of people in accordance with assumed differential ontologies but also enslavement, mapping, claiming, conquest and colonisation. Imperial reason and scientific racism were actively deployed in the invention of the geographical imaginaries of the global South and the global North. Out of these processes emerged the global North as the centre of the world and the global South as the periphery. This chapter performs two broad tasks. In the first instance, it grapples with how the invention and entrapment of the global South in global coloniality happened. In the second instance, it documents the unfolding of resistance and struggles for South–South solidarity as a means not only to break from colonial entrapment but also as a terrain of self-invention in opposition to the Northern domination.
