Abstract

This chapter will provide an overview of fruit names in Chinese. The data collected for analysis included 304 fruit names and 477 fruit-related fixed expressions. The linguistic structures and naming origins of Chinese fruit were scrutinized to examine how fruit names are used in Chinese culture and society. Psychological factors support the use of basic-level categories, and such cognitive devices were an outcome of thinking in metonymy.
