Abstract

Al-Andalus has had a highly difficult reception in Spanish modern culture and scholarship. National Spanish identity was shaped over the 19th century under a strong Catholic influence, thus leaving little room in the history of Spain for Arabic and Islamic al-Andalus. Increasing National Catholic influence during Franco’s dictatorship led ultimately to the idea of Reconquista, according to which Spain is a nation shaped against Islam. More recently, post 9–11 events placed Islam in the spotlight, thus creating a new framework for recovering old biased ideas about the past.
