ABSTRACT

Trees in urban environments are likely to play an increasingly significant role in improving the quality of life in our towns and cities. However, the ecosystem services bestowed on communities in the future by trees are reliant on the appropriate selection of trees for planting. Unfortunately, it is common practice to inadequately evaluate the site and select from a narrow range of well-known species. This chapter presents an approach that could be used to more robustly select trees for urban green infrastructure projects. If these guidelines are adopted, a more resilient urban tree population will be secured for future generations.
