ABSTRACT

The urban climate is a very complex system because of the large number of characteristics that affect weather variables in the urban environment and the different kind of morphologies and materials used in cities all over the world. Urban areas have higher air temperature values than the surrounding rural areas and this phenomenon is called the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The variations in heat storage, radiation absorption, and sensible and latent heat produced by urban land-use types determine large intra-urban air temperature differences and therefore can cause different UHI values within the urban area (Lowry, 1967; Oke, 1982).
