ABSTRACT

The media literacy movement in Thailand first started in 1979 (Chawchai, 2013). From 1980 to 2011, activities related to the media were driven by foundations and volunteer groups. In the early stages of the movement, those activities were introduced as a means of protecting children and young people from media influences. The Foundation for Child Development was the first organization to have an important role in driving emerging media literacy over the last 36 years (see Langer & Doungphummes, 2006). It emerged with the first media-related activities and later became more specific to the protection of children from television advertising effects. The Foundation for Child Development was the first non-profit organization to incorporate national and international knowledge of media literacy and to develop a Thai model of media literacy (Foundation for Child Development, 2016).
