ABSTRACT

Psychological distress is common following acquired brain injury (ABI), but the evidence base for interventions in this population is small and equivocal. This chapter examines the potential of three newer ‘third wave’ cognitive and behavioural therapies: Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Positive Psychotherapy (PPT). The underpinning theory, core components, contraindications and targets of CFT, ACT and PPT are described along with a brief review of the evidence base for each of the therapies in non-brain injured and ABI populations.
