ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with change leadership in the public sector. Anambra State (Nigeria) was pretty awful when Peter Obi became Governor of the State in 2006. By 2014, when he left office, the State had been transformed. In this interview, Governor Peter Obi discusses what it takes to lead change in the public sector. In an environment where people do not demand good governance from political office holders, the leader must have moral character if he is to carry out a transformation. According to Peter Obi, he must be insanely committed to the course and select a team of equally committed people.

The interview shows that transformation of the public sector depends heavily on the leadership. An authentic, ethical leader (one with moral character) can bring about transformation of the public sector. To sustain the change, however, institutions are required.
