ABSTRACT

Amid corruption, Africa is at a turning point. Corruption hinders Africa’s development for two reasons: it steals resources that could otherwise be used for the betterment of society and it keeps leaders unwilling to change. This chapter offers a model of ethical leadership for change based on virtues and character development. Grounded on strong anthropological origins, it advocates for the practice of virtues or qualities of the mind, will and heart that foster strength of character and stability of personality. Virtuous leadership’s comprehensive approach takes into account task-oriented skills and person-oriented skills, producing excellent outcomes and excellent relationships with stronger follower commitment and loyalty. Virtuous leadership fosters personal excellence and aims at a stable change in people’s attitude, which is the key for sustainable organizational and social transformation.
