ABSTRACT

The growth of online video has contributed to this format becoming an ever ubiquitous part of the way we communicate in our cultural and instructional contexts. Just as this digital environment provides amazing new possibilities for teaching and learning, copyright law presents some unique challenges to fully realizing this potential. This chapter briefly describes how changes to copyrighted instructional video formats and copyright law have intersected with educational use over time. With a greater focus on contemporary teaching and learning use cases and given the benefits of streaming video, campus media (particularly academic library–based) programs are being implemented in a range of approaches in order to expand campus access to digital copyrighted instructional video in the face of a challenging instructional video copyright and marketplace landscape.
