ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how the limitations of U.S. copyright law led to the development of Creative Commons licensing, which shifted the traditional model of ownership from “all rights reserved” to “some rights reserved.” This distinction freed media creators to choose varying levels of restrictions for their works, an appropriate option given the pliable nature of digital content. It provides readers with a guide for use of Creative Commons licensing in student media works, allowing such projects to reach a broader audience. Finally, it examines new business models impacting student media and provides insights on entrepreneurial approaches to sharing content.
