ABSTRACT

Walking represents one of our most beloved outdoor recreational activities. This is not surprising. It offers the opportunity to disconnect and reflect; to experience beauty; to focus on the task that walking represents. Thoreau, an unapologetic walking advocate, once observed: ‘I cannot preserve my health and spirits, unless I spend four hours a day at least, – and it is commonly more than that, – sauntering through the woods and over the hills and fields, absolutely free from all worldly engagements’ (Thoreau 1910 [1862]: para 6).
