ABSTRACT

Hiking, as demonstrated by many contributions in this volume, is one of the most popular leisure and holiday activities across the world. While a multitude of different definitions exists, hiking in its simplest form can be defined as ‘walking for recreational purposes’ (Taylor 2015: 263). Related terms include rambling, tramping, hill-walking, bushwalking, yomping, trail-walking and trekking (Taylor 2015; Werner et al. 2009). The current chapter will treat these terms as being for the most part synonymous and will use hiking as the preferred term.
