ABSTRACT

While hiking has had an effect on tourism since the beginning of alpinism in approximately 1850, it was not until the 1990s that significant contributions to the relevant literature of tourism science started to be made. In Germany, the professional analysis of the demand for hiking started in the year 2000 by tourism specialists, when quality standards were implemented on a national level (introduced by the German Hiking Association). It was only then that studies on a national basis for recording and finding out different types of the demand for hiking commenced (Brämer 2003; BMWi 2010).
