ABSTRACT

First came the idea to hike myself: to walk far and alone in the most remote area I could reach. Images of walking through landscapes devoid of human signs grew in my mind. The prospect of physical challenge and pain drew me; and I was curious about what thought and solitude would do to me. These feelings lasted until the day I finally went. For three months in summer 2014, I hiked different trails in northern Sweden, Norway and Finland, walking about 800 kilometres.
