ABSTRACT
In 1936 Mahatma Gandhi met on two separate occasions with African American leaders—at that time called Negro leaders—in the United States. The first of these meetings was with Howard Thurman, professor and dean at Howard University. It took place on February 21, 1936, and it ended with a prescient remark by Gandhi: “It may be through the Negroes that the unadulterated message of non-violence will be delivered to the world” (Gandhi 1999: vol. 68: 237). At the time, Martin Luther King, Jr. was 7 years old.
