ABSTRACT

Since 2015 the European Union (EU) has faced a refugee crisis as an increasing number of refugees reached Europe by the Mediterranean Sea, fleeing persecution, conflict, and poverty. After entry in the EU area, most refugees head for a few destination countries, including the Netherlands. The challenges shared by the countries receiving asylum seekers are to process asylum applications, to house permit holders, and to facilitate their integration into society. Although the influx of refugees has declined since spring 2016, it has continued and will continue at a steady pace. This chapter discusses the Dutch response to the refugee crisis, focusing on housing, to answer the question: How has the Netherlands addressed the need for emergency accommodation for asylum seekers and for housing for recognized refugees?
