ABSTRACT

Bangladesh’s main identified energy sources are gas, biomass, coal, hydro, solar, and wind. Of the total commercial energy consumption, approximately 67 percent comes from natural gas, 19 percent from oil, and 14 percent from coal (Islam, 2014). Bangladesh imports oil, of which 22 percent is unrefined and 78 percent is refined oil, according to 2014 estimates (Bangladesh. Ministry of Finance, 2015). Although more than 67 percent of the commercial energy demand is met by gas, a substantial amount of biomass is still widely used in rural areas for both commercial and non-commercial purposes including cooking and heating in the brick fields. According to the draft Renewable Energy Policy 2014, biomass fuels supplied 62 percent of total primary energy.
