ABSTRACT

Over the last few decades the scientific literature, institutional and national policymakers (cf. Lomas, Chapter 22 in this volume), and the general public have demonstrated a growing commitment to the furtherance of the happiness and well-being agenda. However, if we were to look through a critical lens at the extensive body of literature they have produced, we would notice that some relevant issues have been surprisingly left unaddressed. In particular, in this chapter we argue that three elements, namely Context, Social Justice, and Values, have been extensively neglected, and that this has significantly impaired the understanding of current scholarship regarding the good life.
