Google reports its customers send an average of 93 million “selfies” every day (Brandt, 2014). Twitter declared 2014 the “year of the selfie.” With such a great focus on the self—indeed, to such a degree that a new term, “selfie,” emerged—one might wonder whether humility is a thing of past, an anachronistic virtue or historical relic of previous eras.
