ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by considering the methodological issues involved in measuring internal and international migration. It highlights the empirical and conceptual difficulties in clearly identifying internal and international migration systems in Asia, giving particular attention to the problematic of borders. The chapter then gives consideration to the localised origins and destinations of the migration systems in both the rural and, most particularly, the urban sector before going on to examine the linkages between the migration systems. It attempts to demonstrate how these linkages change over time consequent upon development. Specific attention is given to multiple and return movements as integral parts of migration and development transitions.
