ABSTRACT

Local economic development planning can be distinguished from economic development more generally by its acknowledgment of, and advocacy of specific practices to mitigate against, the negative externalities caused by even successful and productive market economies. Meanwhile, local economic development planning can be distinguished from regional economic development planning by its particular spatial focus and its emphasis on the local economy within the larger regional and global contexts. This chapter discusses the particular foci of local economic development and how local economic development planning has been developed in established curricula of planning programs in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
