ABSTRACT

Climate change mitigation–primarily focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions–aligns with many, if not all, of the core themes of planning in recent decades, including increased sustainability, equity, livability, and resilience. Moreover, the potential impacts of climate change touch on nearly every aspect of planning, from transportation to housing to economic development to the natural environment. However, scholarly attention to challenges in teaching climate change is still under development. Teaching climate change involves broad-scope, department-wide choices, such as where to situate climate change in a planning program, as well as more narrowly scoped choices specific to individual class periods, such as selection of readings and dealing with technical jargon. This chapter covers the fundamental choices planning instructors will need to make in addressing climate change as part of, or as a primary subject of, their teaching.
