ABSTRACT

While the planning profession has enshrined social justice in its codes of professional conduct, and many of its agreed-upon ethical standards would, if followed precisely, contribute to the making of just cities, the idea of the “just city” is not universally present in planning teaching. This chapter lays out a philosophy of teaching the socially just city based in the code of ethics for the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and pedagogy of dialogue. The chapter is designed to serve as a template for a seminar that leads students through a semester-long thought process, to help them consider the role of social structure in replicating societal inequity. Six main topics frame the course, beginning conceptually and ending with specific planning concerns and concrete actions. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how a pedagogy of dialogue can further help students incorporate equity planning, engagement, and societal diversity into their own practice.
