ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we provide a brief initial overview of the development of giftedness and talent research in different domains. In doing so, we define and compare relevant terms and concepts. This is followed by a survey of the different research approaches in this area, outlined from a psychological and educational perspective. We also highlight the models and factors that have attempted to account for gifted education and talent development in particular contexts. In the final section, we summarize the phenomenology of existing research and attempt to provide an integrated concept of research on gifted education and talent development. Taken together, the chapter provides some insight into why so many different approaches are taken and how unconcise terminology is often used in talent research.
