ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of language policy and the media by reviewing the state of the art, both in terms of literature and in terms of research, with a particular focus on more recent developments over the past decade. The chapter proceeds as follows: Section 20.2 outlines key terms and their uses in this chapter and the types of language policy and media that will be under discussion. Section 20.3 provides an overview of disciplinary perspectives on language policy and the media, with a particular focus on the evolution from traditional news to new and social media. Section 20.4 reviews recent research within a range of national and globalized contexts, and Section 20.5 discusses the core areas of status, corpus, and acquisition planning. Section 20.6 identifies future directions for the field and Section 20.7 concludes the chapter.
