ABSTRACT

As businesses become increasingly global, so do the experiences of many of their employees. The escalation of globalization over the past few decades has led to the emergence of a growing variety of global work experiences while also exposing many of the limitations of traditional expatriation (Mayrhofer et al., 2004). The result has been an exponential growth in the types of work experiences and career paths available to global workers, defined as individuals whose work requires them to either live in a foreign country, travel internationally, and/or regularly interact with business partners living in or from a different country (Shaffer et al., 2016). In this chapter, we explore current research on global work experiences, global careers, and the relationships between the two.
