ABSTRACT

Among the various theoretical and conceptual developments in the social sciences over the past decades, diversity has a prominent place. Beyond describing a social phenomenon including dimensions such as sex and gender, ethnicity, religion and spirituality, or culture and social origin, it has also become a perspective on social reality in its own right. Arguably gender as part of this perspective shows this most clearly. This chapter looks at the concept of diversity and discusses the potential of this perspective to generate new and more differentiated insights when applied to studying careers.
