ABSTRACT

The opening moments of the video game Flower—developed by thatgamecompany and first released in 2009 for Sony’s PlayStation 3—establish two dramatically contrasting environments that propel the game’s narrative: first, a city room; second, an open field. These two environments’ associated sounds, visuals, and available actions open space for curious players to explore, interpret, and influence the game.
