ABSTRACT

Not only are concepts the building blocks for understanding, relating to and guiding practical actions on the ground, they are also the product and representations of contended domains of power, political interests, and epistemic communities who are often clustered around specific policy-driven beliefs. Concepts are institutionalised and become embedded within cultural practices of individuals and organisations. They are adopted in order to illustrate and clarify scientific debates, improve policies, strengthen networks and challenge related knowledge produced by others.
